Question #7 - Do women with "menstrual migraine" eventually grow out of their migraines? Will the headaches continue after menopause? Answer #7 - In about 60-70% of women who have menstrual migraines there is a reprieve after menopause. However, there can be a real flurry of activity in other words the migraines can become much much worse in the peri-menopausal years. And this is felt to be due to the state of flux of the estrogen and the hormonal levels in the peri-menopausal state. In other words when the estrogen hormones levels are really going out of balance in peri-menopause, so will the headaches. And a woman may often have much much stronger headaches, much more erratic headache patterns in peri-menopause so there will be a real storm before things actually settle down post menopausally. Unfortunately in the remaining 30% the headaches will actually continue post menopausally. |
