Question #13 - How much does migraine cost this country? Can headaches become disabling? Is quality of life a factor?

Answer #13 - Unfortunately a large percentage of patients remain undiagnosed in headache and they don’t have to be and even with all the education and all the stress that we put on continuing education from migraine, we just, just put a dent in migraine in terms of diagnosing it in the last 10-15 years, and I think it’s really very important simply because migraine costs this country huge amounts of dollars.

There is over 3 million people who have migraine in this country and it’s costing our health care system $20.00 a second for headache alone; in terms of time lost from work, failed prescriptions, people who go to the Dr. get lost for follow up just don’t return, people who say just as you did, it’s just a headache, it will go away.

And so I think it’s really important from a cost perspective. I think it’s important from patient satisfaction. I think it’s important just for people to have a good lifestyle and to have a decent lifestyle because there are so many people who are actually disabled from their headaches 2-3 days out of the month losing time from work, from social activities, from their family activities to be diagnosed properly and to be treated properly.
